Everything Your Teen Needs to Become a Licensed Ohio Driver
Under Ohio Revised Code Section 4507.09, all new drivers under the age of 18 are legally required to complete an approved driver training course before taking the Ohio road test. This mandate consists of 24 hours of classroom or state-certified online instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed commercial driving school.
At Canal Driving School, our Full Teen Program seamlessly bundles both components into an organized, stress-free curriculum. We guide students from zero driving experience to total road mastery, instilling safety-first reflexes that protect them for a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions About Full Teen Program
Does my teen need a permit before starting classroom coursework?
No! In Ohio, teens can enroll in and begin the 24-hour classroom or online portion at age 15 and 6 months without having their permit yet. However, a valid Ohio Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC) is required before scheduling the 8 hours of in-car driving lessons.
Are the in-car lessons one-on-one or with other students?
All behind-the-wheel instruction at Canal Driving School is strictly one-on-one private instruction. Your teen has 100% of the instructor's focus with zero distractions from other student passengers.
How quickly can my teen complete the entire program?
Depending on your family's schedule, online coursework can be finished in as little as 6 calendar days (maximum 4 hours per day allowed under Ohio law). In-car sessions are spaced across 2 to 4 weeks to allow students time to practice the techniques at home between lessons.
What happens if my teen is nervous behind the wheel?
Our state-licensed instructors specialize in gentle, patient, positive reinforcement coaching. Every car is equipped with a dual passenger brake pedal so the instructor can assist immediately if needed, creating a calm, zero-stress learning atmosphere.
