At what age can my teen begin driving school in Ohio?

In Ohio, teens can begin classroom or online driver education at exactly 15 years and 6 months of age. To begin the in-car behind-the-wheel portion, the student must have taken and passed the knowledge test at the BMV to hold a valid Ohio Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC).

Can I take the 24-hour classroom portion online and do in-car lessons with Canal Driving School?

Yes! That is one of our most popular paths. You can complete your 24-hour course online at home and enroll in our 8-hour Behind-the-Wheel Only program. Once you complete both, we issue your official Ohio Certificate of Completion.

What is the Ohio Maneuverability Test and do you practice it?

The Ohio maneuverability test is a two-part test required on the state road exam consisting of driving forward through a 9-by-20 foot box, steering to the right or left of a point marker, stopping parallel, and then backing through the course without hitting any cones or stopping unnecessarily. We practice this extensively during our behind-the-wheel sessions using exact BMV cone measurements.

Do adults (over 18) have to take a full driving school course?

Adults 18 and older are not strictly required by Ohio law to complete a teen course before taking the driving test for the first time. However, if an adult fails the road test on their first attempt, Ohio requires an Abbreviated Adult Course before retesting. Additionally, many adults choose our private lessons to gain crucial confidence and pass on their first try!
